Andrea Doria

Andrea Doria

Summer 1999 saw the unveiling of the latest floor exhibit at the Marine Museum at Fall River. The subject the Italian liner Andrea Doria, a ship known as much for her luxury as for her ill-fated meeting with the Stockholm 60 miles off the coast of Nantucket on the evening of July 25, 1956. Fifty-two lives were lost in the collision, while the sinking of the Doria was immortalized on film and in pictures. Today the Marine Museum is working to revive the memory of the Doria with a permanent exhibit. Highlights include an assortment of artifacts from the vessel, promotional literature, and prize-winning photographic footage of the sinking.

The Stockholm

The spirit of the ship the world recognized as the "grand dame of the sea" is alive and well at the Marine Museum. Featured in this exhibit are a life ring from the Andrea Doria, a 39" detailed model of the liner, original color brochures and deck plans aimed at attracting prospective passengers, first class dinnerware salvaged from the wreck, pictures chronicling Doria's final moments during the early morning hours of July 26, 1956, and more. Visit the Marine Museum to experience the short-lived era of splendor enjoyed by the Andrea Doria - among the twentieth century's most legendary maritime legacies.
